Stuffy nose not going away? You may have a sinus infection…

Is your stuffy nose just not going away? You might have a sinus infection, also known as sinusitis.

Sinus infections happen when fluid builds up in the air-filled pockets in the face (sinuses). This fluid buildup allows germs to grow. Viruses cause most sinus infections, but bacteria can cause some sinus infections.

You may have a sinus infection if you are experiencing:

  • runny and/or stuffy nose

  • facial pain or pressure

  • headache

  • mucus dripping down the throat (post-nasal drip)

  • sore throat

  • cough

  • bad breath

Some risk factors for sinusitis include:

  • a previous cold

  • seasonal allergies

  • smoking or exposure to secondhand smoke

  • structural problems within the sinuses

  • a weak immune system (or taking drugs that weaken the immune system)

If your symptoms last more than 10 days, it may be time to see a specialist. At ENT & Allergy, we treat sinus infections! To make an appointment, call or visit our website. We’re located in East Providence and Warwick, Rhode Island.
